They worked from the original Greek, with the help of Wycliffe Bible Translators, and also referred to English translations and to commentaries supplied by United Bible Societies, and others. More about it: This translation of the New Testament was done by a team of 26 dedicated local people, all native speakers of Hawaii Pidgin in the Islands. The Bible is available to online reading, in a website totally written in Hawaiian Pidgin English, and also for shopping, on Amazon website. There is also a Bible translation to Hawaiian Pidgin English, made by local Hawaiians in 1987. You can check the whole article about Keao Nesmith and his work here. According to the professor, the task of translating those books presents one more result: it reveals how he and other Hawaiian Pidgin English speakers see themselves. Other books translated by Nesmith were The Hobbit and The Little Prince - the last one received the title Da Small Pitot Prince. The term “muggle”, which plays an important role in the books a reference to non-magic users in that universe, was turned it into “makala,” a reference to something which is in a state of magic. It can be noticed in his translation of Harry Potter series. However, the works also demands effort, especially in finding corresponding words in Hawaiian Pidgin English and making the right cultural connections. “In the Hawaiian immersion schools, especially for the teenaged demographic, there’s practically no materials for them to read just to enjoy,” told NeSmith at the HawaiiCon Science Fiction Convention in 2016. According to him, its importance lies in the hope that people will feel encouraged to connect themselves with literature. The professor accepted the task and described it as a “labor of love”. It all started when a Irish publisher reached out nesmith with the idea of translating Alice Adventure’s in Wonderland. Since 2013, he has been involved in a project of translating literature into Hawaiian Pidgin English as a way of preserving the language. Keao Nesmith (the man in the picture) is not only a PhD in Applied Linguistics.
